Interview – Allan Smithy + Song Stream

Stream ‘4 Letter Reason’ below.

Who are you and what are you doing here?

Il nombre Allan Smithy and I’m trying to speak Spanish.

When did you know you wanted to pursue music as a career?

I don’t know if I have ever viewed it as a career choice, but I think it was after high school. I just really wanted to play a gig at the Ambercrombie hotel. Never happened, but it got me into the industry.

How would you describe your music?

Nostalgic Australiana. With lots of modulated guitars and stories about friends.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your sound which one would it be?

Probably the Streets, as it was the first song I wrote for this project. I just wanted to sound like The Go-Betweens. Everything I have written since has slightly differed from my initial intentions when I started the project.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets you apart from the rest?

I write and record my songs backwards and then reverse them and that’s how I get the finished product. Also my music is glutton free.

Where are people able to hear your songs?

Check it out on iTunes, Spotify and Soundcloud

Are you playing any shows anytime soon?

Keep an ear to the ground you’ll definitely be able to catch a show soon. Shows being announced any day now!

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a musician?

When you sell out any venue its always a pretty good milestone. For me this project is so new nothing has really happened yet. I think I am just proud of the music I am putting out now. I’m really happy with it, and to me that’s the most important part of the musical process.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

ADKOB – They will blow your mind.
Jumping Jack Williams – Is an incredibly authentic musician from Melbourne. Check out his song Leatherface. If you don’t get goose bumps go see your doctor because something is wrong.

Andy Golledge – I think he is fantastic and love everything he does. He makes me want to wear big belt buckles.

Anything Else you’d like to add?

I plan on building my own guitar. Probably won’t play like Brian Mays guitar, probably won’t sound like Brian Mays guitar but hopefully it will look like Brian Mays guitar.
