Who are you and what are you doing here? (what is your name, what is the band and what is your role in the band?)
My name is Adnan Kadric, I am the vocalist and guitarist from Melbourne band Backyard.
How did the band start?
I started working at a music retail store and on my first day, the Dinosaur Jr. album Green Mind was playing over the speakers. The person responsible for putting it on would turn out to be the guitarist in Backyard, Leon Andrews.
After months of talking music we loved at work, we went to see The Stevens play a show at the Tote and agreed we both missed being on stage. We decided at that show that we should form a band.
I’d played in a past band with Joe Daly and immediately knew he was the only person to play bass. A friend of his, Thomas Barlow, was around and after seeing him play, we asked him to come down to a rehearsal. A couple of weeks later we recorded our first single ‘Young and Old’.
How would you describe your band?
Honest, suburban, for the sake of the song, pop music.
If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your band which one would it be?
‘Certain Years’ (which will be available on our debut EP, out in October)
Things really came together for us after this in terms of finding our own sound, it wasn’t something we were looking for, it was just a natural development. I remember bringing the song in, and within the second play through, it was done. It seems to be the way most songs have come about since.
In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?
I guess that nothing is premeditated when it comes to the songwriting, a critical and essential theme in the songs is honesty. Hopefully that comes through to the listener.
Where are people able to hear your songs?
Our new single ‘Royal Park’ will be available October 14th. Our debut extended play is out November 4th.
Are you playing any shows anytime soon (if you live outside of Australia, do you have any plans for a trip down under)?
November 9th – Workers Club (Melbourne)*
November 10th – The Bridge Hotel (Castlemaine)*
November 18th – Oxford Art Factory (Sydney)*
November 26th – The Pinnacle Hotel (Melbourne)
What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a band?
It ranges from playing a great show to recording but generally just having everything come together feeling good is nice.
Our friends Kieran Daly and Chris Wright, who manage the band, track everything we record and help us hold everything together have just invited us to support their band on a run of dates across the east coast. Those shows should be a highlight.
Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?
I need to mention ‘The Stevens’, ‘Eaten by Dogs’ and of course Bendigo’s own ‘Fountaineer’.
Anything Else you’d like to add?
Have a look at those tour dates and head down to a show if you have the time.
