Interview – Breaking Orbit

Who are you and what are you doing here??)

My name is Matthew Quayle and I sing and play guitar for Breaking Orbit. What am I doing here?? That is a very good question that I am hoping someone will help me out with one day. While I ponder that question though, I spend my thoughts and inspiration on creating music with 3 of my closest mates, for others to listen to while they wonder what they are doing here.

How did your music career start?

Personally it started as an 8 year old boy learning the piano, then added trumpet to the mix and the rest stemmed from there, leading to where I am now.
In terms of Breaking Orbit, our career originated from many different sources. I met Tyson about 13 years ago and we performed in a different band. After that band dissolved, we started a new band with another friend and we met Ayden at a local gig who completed the lineup on bass. Later the spot for lead guitarist, percussionist, producer, all round nice guy became available and Ayden’s brother, Dylan aptly claimed the title.

How would you describe your music?

The overarching ‘genre’ would probably be ‘progressive rock’ however we like to include words like;
ambient, eclectic, heavy, dynamic, tribal

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your sound which one would it be?

Time Traveller. It is maybe a bit on the heavier side of ‘our sound’ but it has it all

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?

Well, that might depend on what you consider an ‘instrument’? Regardless, what sets us apart as a band, is that we are all secretly from the future and have been doing this for a really, really, long time

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a musician?

I would have to say releasing our debut album ‘The Time Traveller’ would be the greatest achievement. It was the culmination of the first 5 years of the band’s life. We had plenty of hurdles along the way, but in the end, the album was self produced (by our very own Dylan Mitrovich), self funded, self managed and we were all very proud of the final product. We have been a completely different band after going through the process.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

Sleepmakeswaves

Twelve Foot Ninja

Circles

Anything Else you’d like to add?

See you on the road next month!
