Interview – Dom Youdan

Stream ‘Tigerlily’ below

Who are you and what are you doing here??

I hear this question delivered in the style of an 80’s action movie by a retired cop… ‘FREEZE! Who are you, and what are you doing here!?’

Well, I’m Dom Youdan. I’m a muso trying to bring some heartfelt vocals and fierce beats to contemporary pop/indie.

Why I’m here? I fell for an Aussie at my second ever live gig in London and have been in love with Australia / the Australian music scene ever since.

When did you know you wanted to pursue music as a career?

Pretty late. I always knew I could sing but was absolutely terrified of playing live. By the time I got over the fear of failure, I was 24. But, playing catch-up is pretty fun. I taught myself guitar / piano / production and have been giving it a crack ever since. Plenty still to learn.

How would you describe your music?

Hmmm. How about… ‘a-slightly-more-upbeat-male-version-of-Banks’?

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your sound which one would it be?

I think ‘Tigerlily’ best represents me as a singer-songwriter. I’m proud of the lyrics and the introspective way it looks at love. ‘Don’t Love Me’ is my other side, a little more, ‘windows down/ volume up’. They are the two sides of the coin I want to stand for.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets you apart from the rest?

Ha, shit I’ve been rumbled.

Where are people able to hear your music?

All the awesome streaming places. Here https://open.spotify.com/artist/7mFtdq1kVeZHdWjponFfWx and here http://soundcloud.com/dominic-youdan. and you can also find me here https://www.facebook.com/dominicyoudanmusic and here https://twitter.com/DominicYoudan!

Oh, I also have music videos for Tigerlily (coming soon) and Don’t Love Me that you can check out.

Are you playing any shows anytime soon?

I’m just about to announce my EP launch shows, which will be at the end of November. I’m getting excited.

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a musician?

Giving it a go, laying yourself bare and just seeing what happens. It’s terrifyingly awesome.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

West Theberton, Didirri and Exhibitionist are all getting hit hard on my playlist atm.

Anything else?

Ummmm….just that I hope people like the chunes.

All the best,
