Interview – Flynn Effect + Stream

Stream ‘All For Love’ below.

Who are you and what are you doing here? (what is your name, what is the band and what is your role in the band?)

My name is Tomina Vincent and I front Brisbane band Flynn Effect.

How did the band start?

By chance really, we met at a Karnivool show and I was asked to audition by their previous drummer. They sent me a couple of tracks to work on, I showed up at the audition a few weeks later. The rest is history.

How would you describe your band?

Rammstein and Lacuna Coil had a baby, now the baby’s all grown up and wants to leave home to become a part-time supervillain.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your band which one would it be?

I’d say “Never Let Me Go”, because it’s dramatic and over the top, but sincere and to the point. We like to have fun with our music and we’re always experimenting, but I think this song specifically represents the essence of what we do.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?

We play real ones for starters haha. I think it’s probably the music we do, it’s not exactly what’s popular at the moment, in fact it’s quite the opposite. We’re not interested in being a trendy band and we’ve never consciously tried to fit into a mould or a scene of any kind. So I hope we’ve achieved a sort of originality. It’s certainly something we strive for.

Where are people able to hear your songs?

You can find Flynn Effect on iTunes, Spotify, Bandcamp and Soundcloud.

Are you playing any shows anytime soon?

We are about to announce some actually, but we’ll have to keep them a secret for now.

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a band?

Probably supporting Lacuna Coil last year. They’re an amazing band and a huge inspiration for us, so it was a dream come true. I was personally incredibly humbled to perform at Max Watts as well, I’ve seen so many of my favourite bands there and it was a real honour to be on such a legendary stage. I had a moment of complete disbelief during the show; I looked around and thought, is this really happening?  It was a highlight for sure.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

Figures from Melbourne – fantastic band with an insane live show. If you like Karnivool and Dead Letter Circus, you’ll love these guys (and gal).

Drown This City – Stupendous musicians and a female vocalist that will blow you away.

I can’t not mention Osaka Punch – the most fun you’ll ever have with your clothes on.

Anything Else you’d like to add?

Only that we’re very excited to release our new record in August and we hope you dig it!
