Who are you and what are you doing here? (what is your name,  what is the band and what is your role in the band?)

My name is Cam Smith, I am the vocalist of Hotel Books from Porterville, California, USA.

How did the band start?

The band began in 2011. I was writing poetry on a blog and had friends who pushed me to share those poems on stage. My best friend Matt then began playing guitar on stage with me, and it slowly turned into Hotel Books.

How would you describe your band?

We are a Faith-based ambient indie rock band with spoken-word vocals. Lyrically, we focus on the concepts of Love, relationships and asking questions. Musically, we draw influence from a lot of ambient, post-rock and indie rock bands.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your band which one would it be?

This is a difficult question because we began as a duo and are now a full band, so there are two distinct instalments of Hotel Books, but I think there are a few songs on our new album, “Run Wild, Young Beauty,” that do a good job expressing our overall musical and lyrical style. Mainly, I think ‘August (Part Two)’ and the song ‘Nothing Was The Same’ do a decent job doing so.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?

I would like to think that the emotional display we express on stage is a big part of our identity as a band, as well as our blunt approach to our message.

Where are people able to hear your songs?

We have music on Spotify, iTunes and then albums available through MerchNow.

Are you playing any shows anytime soon (if you live outside of  Australia, do you have any plans for a trip down under)?

We toured the Australian east coast once in 2013 and we had an absolute blast. We hope to return very soon on another tour sometime this year, but we don’t have any official plans yet.

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a band?

I think the release of “Run Wild, Young Beauty” is what I am most proud of at this point. Touring Europe and Australia was huge for us, but I feel like this new album is the most cohesive and honest thing we have done as a band to date.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

In my opinion, Hearts Like Lions is the next big thing. They’re an indie rock band on Tooth & Nail Records. I think Hail the Sun is incredible, as well as our new friends in Household.

Anything Else you’d like to add?

Thank you to anyone who has checked out the new album. If you have not yet, I would encourage you to do so. We had a great time working on it and we hope you enjoy it. Thank you!
