Interview – Howlite

Who are you and what are you doing here? (what is your name, what is the band and what is your role in the band?)
My name is Alison, I sing, write and play guitar in Howlite.

How did the band start?
Howlite began as a solo project for me to experiment with different songwriting and production techniques. As I moved into a performance sphere, I found I preferred playing with other people as opposed to rigging up samples onto my keyboard or laptop. It started with my friend Andrew on piano, then I asked my partner Ben to fill in on bass and guitar, and we’ve just added our friend Paul to the lineup, who’s jumped on board as our drummer. It’s great having people onstage who’ve got your back, and are there to share the experience.

How would you describe your band?
We’ve been described as goth-folk, which I quite like. Paul, our drummer is from a metal background, Andrew, our piano player is jazz trained, Ben comes from punk and indie rock bands and I started out as a folk/singer songwriter. So we’re a bit of a bizarre combination, with a variety of inspirations, but somehow it all connects.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your band which one would it be?
We are constantly writing and creating better songs, and it’s hard to pick just one to define us because they all represent a different side of Howlite. I think our latest single ‘Saviour’ is a good indication of what we’re capable of, and the direction we’re heading in stylistically though.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?
I think we’re quite an old fashioned band at heart, we all have adult office jobs during the week, so being musicians is kind of like our cool alter egos* where we get to live the life we’d rather have. All our spare time, money and thoughts go into music.
*we are not cool.

Where are people able to hear your songs?

Bandcamp, Soundcloud, Spotify, iTunes, Facebook, Vinyl, and Youtube soon!

Are you playing any shows anytime soon (if you live outside of Australia, do you have any plans for a trip down under)?
We have our 7” vinyl single launch at Polyester Records (October 27th), and will be releasing the single video that weekend, which is pretty exciting! We’ll then be hitting the road in support of the single, playing Revolver Bandroom with Seattle Fix for their EP launch Saturday 4th November, and The Toff In Town with The General Assembly for their Album launch Thursday 16th November.

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a band?
Every milestone is our greatest achievement! I’m constantly surprised at how far we’ve come as a band and what we’ve achieved in the short time we’ve been around. It’s easy to get weighed down in looking forward, and constantly feeling like you should be further along, doing more, doing better. So it’s important for us as a band to focus on ourselves, and not compare our story to that of other bands in the industry, because everyone is on their own path. I’m proud of the music we’re making and the people we are.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?
The General Assembly, Seattle Fix, Eilish Gilligan.

Anything Else you’d like to add?
We’d love to see you all at one of our shows!
