Who are you and what are you doing here?

I am Derrick Jenkins. I’m here because I want to encourage my daughter to follow her dreams and whatever makes her TRULY happy. I believe I was put here to make music. So here I am.

How did your music career start?

It started the way most people’s music career starts. I was HORRIBLE. But I was obsessive and passionate from the very beginning. I listened to the Eminem show one time and decided that I wanted to write my own songs. I used to lock myself in my room and write raps all night when i should have been doing homework. I told my mom in a mcdonalds drive thru one night that I was going to make her rich with music. It’s been on ever since.

How would you describe your music?

My music is a social butterfly. Just like me. It doesn’t like to hang out with just one crowd. I’m really trying to make that statement with this new record I have been working on. I have so many influences spread out among so many different genres. My music has to represent that. I want to blur the lines and break the rules.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your sound which one would it be?

I’m going to pick two because it is a dope segue to this album I have been working on. The first song would be “Latrell Sprewell”. It’s all about the YOUNG Jinx. the mischievous side of me that has been there forever and is still very much there. The second song would be a song called “Shout”. This is Jinx years after “Latrell Sprewell”. A little more grown and reflective. Trying to figure it out just like everyone else he knows. The same Jinx is on both songs but you see the difference. The Jinx on “Latrell Sprewell” might not get invited to his girlfriends family dinner. But the Jinx on “Shout” might. Same person, but totally different, & one might not exist without the other. My music is like that too. So many different sounds and approaches. But all of this is what makes me Jinx.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?

What sets me apart is that I am fully aware that there is nobody else that can be Derrick Jenkins better than me. I’m making music the way I want to. I’m not going to give you a Kendrick record just because I’m black and I can rap. I’m always going to give you a Jinx record. That can mean a million different things because there are so many dimensions to me as a person and as an artist. I always want the music to be interesting. Not just good.

Where are people able to hear your songs?

jinxuniverse.com is my website. You can find me on twitter, Facebook, youtube & instagram @ jinxuniverse.

Are you playing any shows anytime soon?

None in the immediate future. Right now it’s all about finishing these records.

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a musician?

That I have stuck with this and maintained the same amount of passion and love for it as the day I started. I would make music if money didn’t exist. I’m proud to say that.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/ be keeping an eye out for?

Romeo Testa, Jp Saxe & Allen Stone. Those are three of my favorites right now. All super dope.
