Interview – Joseph J. Jones

I’m Joseph J. Jones. I’m a singer from the U.K and I’m here in Oz to get involved.

First wanted to pursue a career in music when I was about 14 years old. I was singing in a music class for an assignment messing around on the mic singing an old Sinatra song when my friends said “mate you can really sing” – I told him to do one and without me knowing the teacher was there listening too! She said if you wanna pass this exam you’ll sing for me in assembly. I really didn’t want to but she insisted.

So I sung infront of the eldest year in high school with every Jock, hard man and bully watching on. I shit myself to say the least but everyone stood up cheering and clapping after I had finished singing. I was amazed that they liked it and I really got a buzz for it. I thought to myself, I ain’t very academic so I better start taking this seriously!

I would say my music is Alternative Soul that’s on the left side of Pop.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your sound which one would it be?

If I had to pick it I would probably say ‘Gospel Truth’ best defines the sound because it’s all of the above. Electronic elements with sparse, soulful instrumentation sitting underneath a hefty jilted pop song.

My lyrics are always personal but I try to write a song as unselfishly as I can so people can relate. Gospel delivers on all that.

Hard to just boil it down to one song though. All of them play a vital role to me.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets you apart from the rest?

Who I am sets me apart. I am hustling and trying to get somewhere in music and people are always shocked when they hear my voice. It’s like they can’t put 2 and 2 together cause I think they feel I should be running a pub or getting elocution lessons or something! My accent’s basically dirt so when they hear I’ve actually got a decent voice it confuses them.

I’m doing things the hard way for the long term and always have done. That’s what sets me apart.

Where are people able to hear your songs?

People can hear my music across the net on every platform going. Spotify, Apple, Deezer, YouTube! Shazam always helps! I’m always playing shows to so keep an eye out.

Are you playing any shows anytime soon?

I have a UK tour coming up in March and a European tour coming up in May!
No doubt other stuff will come up in the pipe line as I like to keep busy!
Best to follow my Instagram @joseph.j.jones to keep up with what I’m doing…gonna be a busy year ahead.

What is your proudest moment/greatest as a musician?

Proudest moment so far would be selling out Hoxton Bar n kitchen in London.
I remember inviting about 40 of my mates thinking this ain’t gonna be enough people to fit this room and when I got up on stage the room was rammed with 350 people so I was buzzing that we’d sold it out with real fans. Felt like the first time things had started to come together for me.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

Sylvan Esso
King Krule
Fenne Lily
