Interview – latewaves + video

Watch the video for ‘Face Down’ below.

Who are you and what are you doing here? (what is your name, what is the band and what is your role in the band?)

My name is Mikey and I sing and play guitar for latewaves… one word all lowercase

How did the band start?

The idea of the band started a long time ago. My girlfriend of seven years has this little sister named Shawna that shreds at drums. We always talked about starting a group but I was always tied up in some other group and she was an all star college soccer player. Once she finished school I found myself without a band and WITH a bunch of pent up aggression and I needed to write. We got together in a storage space turned rehearsal spot and wrote our first EP “partied out.” Once that was finished we got offered a show opening up for a comedy act at The Saint, a venue in our hometown Asbury Park, NJ. We needed a bass player for the gig so we hit up our pal Howie Cohen to come play. He learned the parts in a few days and since then he’s been with us. We signed a deal with Panic State Records the day of the aforementioned gig and it’s been the three amigos ever since.

How would you describe your band?

I like to describe us as nostalgic and modern at the same time. I like to call us indie and punk but other people have been giving their own opinions too. We’ve been getting that we sound like Menzingers meets Weezer and I can dig that.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your band which one would it be?

“Bailing Out” it’s just brutally honest and in your face. It has the rollercoaster dynamics we love having in our music and the guitar work is what we usually try to go for.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?

There are no smoke and mirrors with us. We write music WE want to hear, we write songs WE wish other artists would be putting out. Kind of that “if you don’t like it you can leave” attitude but with a smile

Where are people able to hear your songs?

everywhere! Spotify, amazon, iTunes. All the internets- you can also order physical copies at panicstaterecords.com

Are you playing any shows anytime soon?

Yes at least once a week. All over NJ NYC and Philly, we set out for a US tour in early spring / late winter.

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a band?

I think the fact that we wrote a record and got it out to the public under a label we love is a huge accomplishment. A lot of people want to do this but they don’t realize how much it engulfs your entire being to be in an active and touring band.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

Definitely another Asbury Park band called “Toy Cars.” Another one (not that they need our help getting publicity) would be PUP because they’re just plain sick. And Thin Lizzy, not enough people know their music besides a few of their hits. They’re rippers.

Anything Else you’d like to add?

Please keep your ear out for us! Follow us on social media @latewaves for everything. We already have a new record written and will be working non stop so if you dig us there will be plenty more coming!!
