Interview – Lilah

Stream ‘Pushed Your Hands’ here

Who are you and what are you doing here?
I’m a little here and a little there. For now, I am just making music and trying not to fall down stairs or trip over myself.

When did you know you wanted to pursue music as a career?
Not until after I graduated high school. I always wanted to do acting and then my mum called a music Uni when I was 17 and I went to try out. There were 2 spaces left and 12 people auditioned that day…somehow, I got in with a dodgy song I had written on guitar about a boy. It was then I realised this was something I really wanted to explore more.

How would you describe your music?
Ambient electronic / atmospheric alternative pop…that was a mouthful. I would say there are two sides to it. My live set is very heavily focused on looping and instrumentation, where my recording process has a lot more structured to music and lyrics.

If you had to pick one song to best describe your sound which one would it be?
I would say it’s a new song I am working on called ‘Lunar Eclipse’. It will be on my EP for sure. It’s probably my favourite song I’ve ever written and I didn’t even really write it…and funnily enough if wrote itself! I was improvising at band practice whilst recording on my phone and it just came out.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets you apart from the rest?
I know people that are incredible at playing an instrument but don’t know how to put that to a song and vice versa – it’s just what works for you. I wouldn’t say something specifically sets me apart, I just do what I do and if people like it, that’s amazing!

Where are people able to hear your songs?
Soundcloud Spotify, Triple J Unearthed

Are you playing any shows anytime soon?
I’m in the process of booking some now…stay tuned!
What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a musician?
Being called “the future of pop.” I find that hilarious and amazing at the same time.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?
Gang Of Youths…everyone should be listening to them at all times. My homegirl Seavera who is an absolute goddess, and lately I have been listening to a lot of Gordi…god she is gold.

Anything else you would like to add?
To anyone that has listened to my song, thank you ❤ And to anyone making music that might be feeling a little lost…please just keep doing what you love and create everything for yourself, not other people. It’s not easy trying to filter your way through it all but just feel everything you do and you will always be moving towards an authentic and creative future.
