Interview – Lou Scarrs + EP STREAM

Stream Lou Scarrs ‘What We Do’ EP below.

Who are you and what are you doing here? (what is your name, what is the band and what is your role in the band?)

I’m Lou, I create and play music under the name Lou Scarrs.

How did the band start?

It began with a little ditty I wrote and recorded into my phone whilst waiting to disembark from an airplane in Brisbane. That idea became a song that I used as the template or corner stone for the Lou Scarrs sound and made me want to start this ride.

How would you describe your band?

I would say my music captures a tense, ominous and sinister feeling simultaneously. Kind of like a rabbit that managed to escape from a fox after some serious dodging and weaving. The rabbit got away but can’t help looking over his shoulder for the fox for the rest of his days. I guess some of the songs are little lighter then that too, poor little rabbit would have a heart attack otherwise.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your band which one would it be?

I’d have to choose the title track from my EP, What We Do. A few 00’s hip-hop moments and some nice guitar work over a lyric inspired by witnessing some toxic relationships. It took a while to wrangle the thing into submission but producer Oscar Dawson and I got it there in the end.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?

It’s one thing to pick up an instrument and play it well. To write a good song requires something else entirely. The song is king. Everything else around it is just decoration. Lou Scarrs champions the song and makes sure the decorations do not detract from the core.

Where are people able to hear your songs?

All the usual suspects. Streaming services and SoundCloud.

Are you playing any shows anytime soon (if you live outside of Australia, do you have any plans for a trip down under)?

No shows planned right now, though I might play a few sneaky shows in the new year. I’m currently focussing on the production of my next single.

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a band?

The completion of my EP What We Do represents my proudest moment to date. Four songs that sit really well together as a piece of work but each bring something exciting on their own. It was a line ball decision with being told in a review by Dave Ruby Howe that one of songs would have been at home on a Batman Forever soundtrack. Kiss from A Rose was on that soundtrack. Enough said.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

Big Scary – Last album Animal was an amazing. A brilliantly cohesive piece of work and I can’t wait to hear what’s next.
Methyl Ethel – Loved the last album but I just get this feeling that these guys haven’t touched the sides yet with what they can do. Bring on album No 3!
Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – Killer jangly guitars and earnest heartfelt songwriting. Debut record is apparently in the can and I’m looking forward to some more gold.

Anything Else you’d like to add?

Only that I watched an old Hugh Grant movie called Mickey Blue Eyes last night and I really can’t recommend it enough. Seriously, I don’t really know why watching Hugh Grant try and speak like a mobster is funny but just trust me on this.
