Who are you and what are you doing here? (what is your name, what is the band and what is your role in the band?)
Hey! It’s Deanna from Lucky Jukebox Brigade. I write songs, I sing those songs, and I play baritone ukulele.
How did the band start?
Once upon a time in 2010, I was backpacking across the country putting up craigslist ads to find bandmates. I put up ads in every city I liked with the intention of living wherever I found the right people. Geppi, our bassist found my ad and we planted ourselves in Albany, NY.
How would you describe your band?
We’re the soundtrack to the dance parties you have when you’re home alone with the shades drawn.
If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your band which one would it be?
I would say “Little Fangs,” the first single we released off our upcoming EP. I wrote it really last minute, only a week or two before we went into the studio, and I just felt super compelled, like it had to make it onto this record. It’s about feeling like something is missing and doing everything you can to get it back.
In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?
It’s true that anyone can pick up an instrument, and that’s great. I highly recommend the ukulele. But music has never been a hobby or something to just “pick up” for us. It’s life. It’s all we want to do. I can’t not write songs. I always have a song I’m working on. I have actually written melodies in my sleep…I’ll be dreaming, and I’ll have a melody idea in the dream. If it’s good, I try to wake up so I can hum a quick recording of it, then I go back to sleep. I know there are a lot of bands out there who feel the way we do. It’s hard to put it into words, but ultimately, it’s passion.
Where are people able to hear your songs?
Little Fangs and Bertyl, the first two singles off Savage Fantastic are up right here on our Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/luckyjukeboxbrigade You can also hear them on Spotify, which is lovely.
Are you playing any shows anytime soon (if you live outside of Australia, do you have any plans for a trip down under)?
Yes! We just announced two EP release shows – 2/27 in Albany, NY at The Hollow, and 3/5 in NYC at Arlene’s Grocery. We would adore a trip down under in the future. Give us a couch to crash on, and we’ll make it happen.
What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a band?
For me, recording this EP with Mike Watts. Getting to work with one of your heroes is one of the best experiences you can have as a musician.
Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?
I love this question. Bella’s Bartok, our wild gypsy punk neighbors in Massachusetts. The Elwins, a Canadian pop band who will have you dancing in your chair…check out their music video for “Show Me How To Move.” And Stellar Young, another Albany based indie band who we are obsessed with and want to see take over the world.
Anything Else you’d like to add?
Thank you for the interview! We love making new friends, so if you’re reading this, follow us on Ye Olde Social Media. We’re on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter…we like to post about our shows, our cats, and off the charts vegan recipes. It’s fun and delicious.
