Interview – Make Way For The Man

Who are you and what are you doing here? (what is your name, what is the band and what is your role in the band?)

Make Way For Man

My name is Drew Shepherd and I am the lead guitarist

How did the band start?

The band started out of the ending of 2 other bands. Adam (bass) and I were in a band called Prescient, an instrumental band, and our drummer Jordan was in Saviour. Both of the bands split at roughly the same time so as we all knew each other we thought we may as well start a project!

Both John & Sean (singers) came on board separately, we were interested in both but didn’t know which one to chose as they both did really awesome demos for one of our songs. Rather than let one good singer slip we decided why not just have both. Josh (guitar) was in a band previously with Adam and Jordan and we were all friends so it was a no brainer to get him in.

We got to writing straight away and came out with limitless a few months later.

How would you describe your band?

Progressive, heavy, polyrhythmic, techy. I like to think we make music that keeps you guessing and keeps you entertained the whole way through.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your band which one would it be?

Probably We Will Surely Drown, that song has most of the elements of each of our styles in one song. There’s a pop style chorus, progressive sections, breakdowns, djenty style parts and a solo, that pretty much covers everything we like to do!

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?

The fact that all 6 of us come from different musical backgrounds is what I believe will set us apart. We have 6 guys that all have played in different genres for years ranging from pop to death metal. sometimes you will hear a band and straight away think yep at least 3 of those guys must love meshuggah, you can hear it in the music. I’d like to think that with our stuff we can vary it up enough so that there may be a hint of meshuggah in there but with a prog element tied in or pop or something that makes you not be able to put your finger on it!

Where are people able to hear your songs?

Youtube, bandcamp, Itunes, soundcloud and probably a hundred torrent sites I’m sure haha

Are you playing any shows anytime soon (if you live outside of Australia, do you have any plans for a trip down under)?

Yes we have a small tour coming up in July. Perth, Sydney and Melbourne, will be the first tour for us so we are looking forward to getting over. We also have a support show for Drowning Pool coming up on July 31st in perth.

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a band?

Supporting Trivium for our first ever show, it was pretty crazy opening for a band that big and playing to well over 1000 people for your first show!

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

Polaris, they are killing it at the moment, young dudes that will definitely be huge if they keep going as they are.

At Depths, friends from Perth, they are a progressive metalcore band that have an ep coming out soon, really good stuff.

Circles, we had a chance to play with them on the recent Fear Factory tour in Perth, great band.

Anything Else you’d like to add?

Come and see us on tour in July! And keep a look out for some new songs very soon.
