Interview – Mugzy

Who are you and what are you doing here??
Im Mugzy upcoming hip-hop artist from Sydney Australia
What am I doing here? in the world of music? im just tryin to make it šŸ™‚

How did your music career start?
05 was the year I came connected with hip-hop & the culture back when I was in year 8 of high school.
At the time I was suffering from depression from getting punked & bullied a lot so when I found hip-hop it was my escape, a voice, a chance to fight back
At first I started to drop down small rhymes but I knew if I wanted to pursue this dream I had to write full songs
Around 09 I got in touch with a producer named “Glenn Schollum” who owned a studio in Sydney called “Schollum City Records”
together we recorded, produced, mix/mastered 15 tracks over a 2 year process then my 1st album “Ride or Die” released in 2011
As I started to be more involved with musicĀ & hip-hop I then realized I had something to be apart of, something to do with my life, I found my voice šŸ™‚
Around 2013 I was performing at a youth centre band night gig when I ran into a guy named “Pablo Gutierrez” we started talking as he said he enjoyed my first album & performance on the night.
He then told me his got his own studio & would love to record some stuff with me sometime
After a couple of months of writing material I got intouch with him & together we made my 20 track second album “Understand Me”
“UnderstandĀ Me”Ā has become more a hit then my 1st release plus its been getting a lot of exposure around the globe such as radio, magazines etc etc so ill def be hittin up Pablo for a 3rd release sometime soon hahaĀ šŸ™‚

How would you describe your music?
Mostly my perspectives on life in general & my thoughts on it
Sometimes I come across subjects that people wouldn’t see eye to eye with me on, but that’s what I love about hip-hop it gives me the freedom of what I need to express
Besides that I have material about my days with depression & why I wanna make it in the industry, my thoughts on the industry & someĀ fun tracks
not everything I spit is about something negative or bad haha

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your sound which would it be?
Hmm hard question? either “UnderstandĀ Me” orĀ “My Journey” check them out

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up anĀ instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?
My music aint wack haha
Nah on the real though, I think a lot of artists/bands follow theĀ generation trends & they don’t realize when they do that they lose real supported of its genre
Specially in hip-hop its a fast growing genre & moneyĀ has been involved in it to much lately
Most of the artists today are straight wack honestly they are & any true hip-hop lover will say the same thing
With me I love to bring a msg/subject/opinion (whether you like it or not) but with tunes that when you hear itĀ you wanna play it over an over
I think it all depends on your influences too, if you have good influences you will make a good name for yourself
For example I get some artists come up to me & say
im an artist too
I say who you look up to?
they say oh mostly todays music poppin bottles money etc etc
See now you will probs get a hit track but you wont get respected by true hip-hopĀ heads, its honestly how the culture of hip-hop is
AlsoĀ a lot of artistsĀ don’t like toĀ reach out & help one another. most stick to their own groups/own people
with me I love reaching out & if anyone reaches out to me I will work with them whatever the cost/situation is. builds great friendshipsĀ & connects in the long run
The only thing I don’t doĀ is work with wack artists that don’t have something to tell or something to show
other then that im welcoming with open arms most of the time šŸ™‚

Where are people able to hear your songs?
Well my facebook fan page is where its all goin down to keep up to date with whats going on in my career
Type in Mugzy on facebook & ill pop up
Also Reverbnation type in Mugzy187 & my bandpage will pop up
All my tracks are FREE to check out & FREE download šŸ˜‰

Are you playing any shows anytime soon?
No I have put the shows on hold for a bit so I can write material for my 3rd release & plan it out a bit more
Also promote myself with more radio play, mags, people, etc etc with the songs I already have

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a musician?
2012 I was performing at an event in Sydney called “Urbanstar” it was kinda like a talent show specialized in hip-hop & RnB
On the night there were 3 judges & you got judged out of 10
there were about 20/30 performers I think & I was the only one who did original material on the night, while everyone else did covers
Anways one of the judges was a guy named “Marcus Pernell” producer who worked for Def Jam & Sony, so when I saw that on the promo poster I knew I had to put my name down for this event & out everything I had into my performance to impress someone that big in the industry
After the night was over I went up to speak with him & his reply was somethin along the lines of he enjoyed my performance, couldn’t understand why the other judges gave me a 0 but he gave me a 10/10 because he hates covers, to him it doesn’t bring out what an upcoming artist is ment to show & also he could see my hustle as an artist of wanting something more in my career
In the end the proudest moment about it was I have become good friends with him , someone that high up in the industry that has probs worked with artists I look up to/want to follow in their footsteps, it sometimes makes me think WOW
“Lets hope his my ticket out” šŸ˜‰

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?
& I
haha šŸ˜‰
