Interview – Nova and The Experience

Who are you and what are you doing here? (what is your name, what is the band and what is your role in the band?)

James, from Nova and the Experience, and my role in the band is to wake up the other slackers in the band when we are on tour and we have half an hour to get to the airport before we miss our flight (I sometimes also play guitar and sing)

How did the band start?

I (james) met Anna when she came out of the same womb as I did, a couple of years after me. We had been writing a few songs and started gigging with Jake, who went to our school. Then Laurie, my best bud, got in on the action cause he played drums.

How would you describe your band?

I would describe it using words. And those words would probably be: the imaginary musing of a 10 year old.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your band which one would it be?

Dragonflies and Waterfalls. This song was the first in a slightly new direction for us and I really enjoy playing it.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?

Well, sometimes we make newspaper hats at gigs and hand them out to the crowd, because a song we play is about going to an island and we want them all to come with us. Stuff like that.

Where are people able to hear your songs?

Most of them are up on iTunes and there are also a bunch of video clips on YouTube. Check out Sound Cloud as well.

Are you playing any shows anytime soon (if you live outside of Australia, do you have any plans for a trip down under)?

Yeh we have a small 7 date tour of the east coast starting in Feb, we play Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, Canberra and Brisbane. Check out our Facebook for the deets.

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a band?

At the end of last year we got given the inaugural Development Award from Mushroom Records. We are so stoked to start working with those guys. Was definitely a good day.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

You probably already know The Kite String Tangle, but if you don’t, get onto him! We met him back stage at Red Deer Festival last Sept. just before he exploded across the country. Such a nice guy. Then check out Yeo, got some great stuff on JJJ Unearthed, and it’s hard to believe he’s not massive. Then there is a great Sydney band we know called Enerate. Their two songs ‘Unstoppable’ and ‘I think I love’ are both awesome sickkkk!
