Interview – Off With Their Heads

Off With Their Heads

Who are you and what are you doing here? (what is your name, what is the band and what is your role in the band?)

Ryan Young. I sing / play guitar / write songs for Off With Their Heads

How did the band start?

It started in 2002 in a basement in Minneapolis as my project that could never break up. Meaning that I would be able to do a band that centered around my ideas and vocals. I just didn’t want to rely on anyone else to accomplish what I needed to accomplish, without any danger or worry of members wanting to call it quits.

How would you describe your band?

Sad songs about a troubled dickhead.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your band which one would it be?

I would say Nightlife off of our new record. If you want an honest glimpse into the band lyrically, sonically, and vibe wise, thats the one that I feel probably captures it best.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?

Just because someone can pick up an instrument doesn’t mean they have the drive or soul to back it up. Its the only thing in life that I’ve found where I can be 100% honest about whats going on in my head. Dan from Alkaline Trio said I play guitar with soul. I thought that was funny, because I thought I played guitar like a car crash victim.

Where are people able to hear your songs?

Are you playing any shows anytime soon (if you live outside of Australia, do you have any plans for a trip down under)?

Always on tour. Will be part of the Hits and Pits tour hitting Australia in November.

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a band?

I’ve met all of my idols from being in this band, and realized that they are no different than I am. I grew up on a farm and got into Epitaph records through compilation CD’s in the 90’s. Now I put my records out on that label. Thats a pretty goddamn cool thing for me in and of itself.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

There is a fantastic punk band from New York City called Morning Glory. They put out the best record I have heard in years. Make sure and pick it up. Its on Fat Wreck Chords and is called “Poets Were My Heroes”.

Other than that, you should be listening to Manchester Orchestra and The Mountain Goats.
