Interview – Residual

Who are you and what are you doing here? (what is your name, what is the band and what is your role in the band?)

Hey! I’m Sam and I sing and play Guitar in Residual.

How did the band start?

The 4 of us knew each other from playing in other bands together when we were younger. We had all been pretty heavily involved in the hardcore and metal scene and we eventually fell out of it and all didn’t do much for a while until I started writing some stuff and was curious how it would go in a band situation and a few months later Residual was born. We played our first show in August of 2013 and I’d like to think of that as where it really began for us, after that show we’ve only more gained momentum and it’s been great!

How would you describe your band?

We always have trouble with this question, mainly because to my knowledge we have never sat down and said “Lets write a song like….”

However we’ve been told our more recent stuff reminds people of acts such as Boy and Bear, Matt Corby, The Rubens and a bit of Kings of Leon, which aren’t necessarily bands we’ve taken a lot of influence from, we like to think our sound is just the result of all four of us playing together and people are free to take from that whatever they want.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your band which one would it be?

I’d have to say it’s potentially the last song on our upcoming debut EP, it’s called ‘remake’ and it’s one of the older songs on the record but I love to play it. I think it’s it pretty powerful and emotive but so simplistic, I think it’s one of the better balances we’ve found in terms of our songs and their dynamics. I’m really proud of it!

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?

None of us consider ourselves incredible musicians, but we like writing, recording and performing what we believe to be solid, half decently composed songs that we’d listen to if we weren’t in the band and I don’t think that’s something that makes us unique but it’s certainly reason enough for people to at least give our music a go.

Where are people able to hear your songs?

Are you playing any shows anytime soon (if you live outside of Australia, do you have any plans for a trip down under)?

Yeah we will be supporting British India at The Geelong Wool Exchange, March 21st and will be touring through April and early May.

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a band?

I think our proudest is yet to come, once we have our EP completely mixed, mastered and in it’s case we will finally have something we can get out to people that represents us musically as a band at this point in our career and we’re really excited about that!

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

  1. Jordan Riddle – He has sort of become the un-official 5th member of the band and he will be touring with us in April!
  2. We The People – These guys have plenty of energy on stage and a heap of catchy songs
  3. Native – Played one of our first shows with him, blew our minds!
