Interview – Ryan Downey

Who are you and what are you doing here??)

I’m Ryan Downey and I’m a singer/songwriter. I’m here because I have a new single out called ‘Only Time’. It’s an Enya song that I’ve courted into an upbeat, all-vocal affair. It’s off my upcoming mini-LP ‘Me & Her’.

When did you know you wanted to pursue music as a career?

During my childhood I was always very interested in music, both writing and performing it. During my late teens I dabbled in recording and playing gigs when I first came to live in Melbourne. Other interests lured me away for a while but then in my mid twenties I returned to it with a stronger feeling of purpose and direction and have been focused on it since.

How would you describe your music?

Because it’s filled with an array of elements I want it to be when I’m making it, I can really only effectively provide descriptions that others commonly give. People often use the words ‘tender’ and ‘mysterious’, and I guess they’re pretty strong connecting factors through it.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your sound which one would it be?

On a good day, I would hope that all of them do in their own way.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets you apart from the rest?

Well, perhaps for this record it’s that I didn’t pick up an instrument at all. After a nasty fall, I made this one using only vocals and body percussion. So, perhaps instead, it’s my ability to gain more from a broken arm than the common perk of sympathy.

Where are people able to hear your songs?

They can find it on any of the online platforms they favour, iTunes, Bandcamp, Spotify… Or, to make things easier, right here at my website: www.ryandowney.net
Are you playing any shows anytime soon?

I’ll be doing my first proper tour to coincide with this release. It’s a small, but handsome one of Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart.

Melbourne – 31st March @ The Toff in Town Hobart (MONA) – 2nd April (1pm – 3pm) @ MONA Hobart – 2nd April (evening) @ The Grand Poobah Sydney – 7th April @ The Newsagency

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a musician?

Every new step is very rewarding and kind of ellipses the last. I wasn’t really sure how this new record and it’s singles would be received due to the experimental nature and that it’s a concept album containing a number of covers. So the fact that the first two singles are gaining really great radio and online support is providing a wonderful feeling.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

Luckily in today’s scene there are many great local musicians around, which means this isn’t an easy or safe question to answer! I’d have to leave someone off the list, which I’d rather not do. What a cop out.
