INTERVIEW: THIS WAY NORTH

We sent Melbourne’s THIS WAY NORTH our 50+ Question QnA Buffet and asked them to choose and answer 11 questions that would best introduce Cool Try readers to the band.

Does each member of the band have a nickname? If yes, spill them! If not, please make them up right now!

Cat = Kitty Cat

Leisha = Jungal Pants (Totes just made that up)

What is your favourite track to perform live?

It varies from show to show but it’s often the latest track. Make it Work is a full body experience for me as a singing drummer and we add a live loop in the middle where Leisha solos. Gotta be super focused for this one, no hungy bellies lol.

Care to give us a gear rundown?

My Kit set up is a Custom Maple DW Collectors 12, 14, 20 kick and a deep deep 14×8.5 snare. I have Maple wood hoops on all the drums. Cymbals are an eclectic mix 13” Sabian HHX Manhattan hats, 16” HHX studio Crash, 18” Zildijan K Custom Dark.

I’m just bringing samples and triggers into the mix now too.

Have you ever tried to learn a new instrument or technique and just flat out failed at it?

Oh yeah, all the time. I wouldn’t say “failed at it” just to impatient to have to start from scratch. I just wanna pick up a guitar and shred straight up. No dice.

All touring bands know that no two venues are created equal. What are some of the best rooms you’ve played and why?

That’s the beauty of touring. Every night you’re in a whole new room and you have to create a new world. Northcote Social Club is always great, the size and the sound there are just perfect for connecting with the crowd. There’s also a bar in Beechworth called Tanswells. We get there from time to time and just play in the front bar. It’s tiny and packed and everyone is with us for the whole musical journey. I live for that shit!

What is the first song you ever wrote and did it make it onto a release?

We’ll I wrote a few songs as a teenager and then promptly forgot that writing was an option for me. I got lucky and busy playing with so many other great songwriters and just focussed on the drums. When we formed This Way North I though “I’ll give it a crack” and that’s when I wrote “Pretty Much” which ended up being our first single release.

Recently, creating more diversity within the Aus music scene has been a high priority for event organisers and music curators everywhere, what changes have you personally seen and how have they affected you/your band?

It’s so obvious these days when people don’t make an effort. Seeing a festival line up of dude bros is so eye rolling. It just seems lazy. But I have to say, there are so many directors and organisers these days who are aware and who are making the conscious changes. This is where it begins, these are the people who are the taste makers so when they embrace diversity, it translates to and entire audience. I think the change is inspiring!

Without invoking genre, describe your music…

Like a glorious Saturday afternoon driving into the sunshine to your best mates party.

Where are people able to hear your songs?

Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify, YouTube… pretty much all the usuals but our wesite is a good place to start www.thiswaynorth.com
