What better day to post our interview with Matt from Young Lions than today as it is the release day for their much anticipated second album ‘Blue Isla’. So sit back have a read of the interview and then go and purchase ‘Blue Isla’ from this link and support great music. Also check out their latest music video for ‘Tearing Us Apart’ below.

Who are you and what are you doing here? (what is your name, what is the band and what is your role in the band?)

My name is Matt and I play drums for Young Lions.

How did the band start?

Young Lions started in 2013 after all our old bands bad broken up. We were all looking to start something new and as such- Young Lions was born.

How would you describe your band?

The members – like brothers. We stick together like family and look out for each other no matter what.
The sound – epic and anthemic pop/rock. Think a mixture of elements of 30 Seconds to Mars with the tones of Explosions in the Sky.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your band which one would it be?

That would have to be the lead single off our second album Blue Isla ‘When Will we be Free.” It was for that reason that we chose it to be the song to represent the album and our new sound.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?

In the recordings, I think that would be the honestly of the lyrics and how personal the songs are. The variation displayed in the album between songs really sets us apart as well – especially on Blue Isla. As for live, I think it’s the emotion we show on stage and the raw, loud and intense performances that we give.

Where are people able to hear your songs?

Both albums will be on most online platforms (including Spotify and iTunes) as of the 27th of Februray. The singles from both albums can be found on Youtube along with their respective film clips.

Are you playing any shows anytime soon (if you live outside of Australia, do you have any plans for a trip down under)?

Sure do – the Australian Tour for ‘Blue Isla’ kicks off in a few weeks. Dates are as follows:

Saturday February 14: The Brightside, Brisbane, QLD – 18+

Thursday February 19: Hot Damn @ The Exchange Hotel, Sydney, NSW – 18+
Friday February 20: Tattersalls Hotel, Penrith, NSW – 18+

Saturday February 28: Bang @ The Royal Melbourne Hotel, Melbourne, VIC – 18+

Thursday March 5: Last Night, Perth, WA – 18+

Friday March 6: YMCA HQ, Leederville, WA – All Ages
Saturday March 7:
Babushka, Perth, WA – 18+

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a band?

The recording of Blue Isla is a real testament to how close we have become as a unit in such a short time. During the month we spent on the coast recording we were camping in a van during the middle of winter with no money and it was my first time recording with the guys – so things were set to be a challenge. In the end though we were all stoked with the final product and can’t wait to share it with everyone.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

I’m really loving Ghost Atlas from the States at the moment. Local guys would include Alibrandi who are about to release their first full length album as well as Guards of May who are a great bunch of guys.
