Q&A w/ Aspy Jones

All artists go through periods where they seem to lack creativity, when you’re experiencing one of these phases, what do you do to get yourself out of it?

I try something new. If the ideas are just not flowing I push myself out of my comfort zone and visit new places, talk to new people or try new experiences until something or someone inspires me.

Aside from other artists and music, what inspires you?

Comedians. Getting up on stage to perform is scary enough without having to make people laugh as well! It must be the hardest job in the world but they make the world a happier place and they have my utmost respect.

Have you ever tried to learn a new instrument or technique and just flat out failed at it?

Yes I’m doing that at the moment. I thought playing the trumpet would be pretty cool but let me tell you, it’s a lot harder than it looks!

There’s a full 80s/90s pop culture and music resurgence happening right now, are you into it?

What resurgence? I’ve always been heavily into that era and I would have loved to have had the opportunity to see some of those amazing artists play live at the height of their careers. I was definitely born in the wrong era!

What is the first song you ever wrote and did it make it onto a release?

The first song I ever wrote was called ‘Hate my Job’ and funnily enough, lots of people could relate to it when I played it live. It was about my first job and I sang it to my parents continuously until they agreed to let me give music a go. I’ve never released it but maybe I should give it a revamp and put it back into the set list!

What is the biggest challenge you have had to overcome as a band/artist so far?

Choosing and sticking to a genre! I love so many genres of music so when I write a song I have limited control about which genre it’s written in. It really depends on the type of music I’m listening to at the time so if I want to write in a particular genre I have to listen to that genre and nothing else.

Not music related…. or a question, but we’d love to see and share an image of your pet/s…

This is my dog, Jedi (spot the Star Wars geek) looking very proud of himself after shredding two sun lounger cushions. We got him from a rescue centre as a pup and he was crazy for the first 3 years, destroying anything he could get his teeth into but he’s calmed down a bit now.  You still can’t leave your shoes out though!

What was your first ever favourite song?

There is no way on this earth I can tell you what my favourite song was when I started actually paying attention to music if I ever want to be taken seriously as a song writer! I get obsessed with a song and have to play it over and over again, listening to it on different speakers and picking it apart until I know every sound that’s in the song and then, just as everyone in my house is about to kill me because they are fed up of hearing it, I move onto another song and start the process again.

What’s the best show you’ve been to this year?

Bluesfest always has such a great mix of artists.  This year I was blown away by The Elephant Sessions, John Butler Trio, Newton Faulkner, Michael Franti and the great Lionel Richie.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

I’m glad I can pick various genres so I would probably go for The Lyrical, Odette and The Elephant Sessions, all of them are awesome live!
