All artists go through periods where they seem to lack creativity, when you’re experiencing one of these phases, what do you do to get yourself out of it?
Yeah it’s the pits when that happens, because nothing beats that feeling in your belly when inspiration is fueling your creativity. You get into a cool flow state and the work seems almost effortless. Which in turn makes it feel more legitimate or something?
But I reckon I’m more often NOT in that state, sadly. So I’ve got a few tricks to get the job done for sure. Being a math teacher’s daughter, I go about writing strategically when I don’t have the inspo juice. Setting limitations like: ok I’ll write a song in this time signature, or in B major (because whoever thinks it’s a good idea to write in B major!?). Making little challenges like that makes it fun too (for music nerds I guess).
What is your local scene like?
Melbourne is the best! The music is always on! And it’s lovely because all my friends play, and it’s just my favourite thing to see them be legends. I feel spoiled and lucky living in this little town.
What is your favourite track to perform live?
The last track of my EP, ‘Only One’.
A lot of my songs have heaps of chords, and heaps of words. It can be a tiring sometimes. But then I get to this song, which has barely any chords, and barely any words. The audience gets to, like, breathe for a second and the impact is super. I play it solo, always. It kind of of puts me in a meditative state. It’s a good one to end on.
Aside from other artists and music, what inspires you?
Christmas, red meat, being fancy free, thinking that someday my prince will come and the rainbow fish.
Do you have any in-band memes? Plzzzz share one.
My alter is Cliot and that is a very long story…
[hahahahahahaha wow. – ct]
Fuck/Marry/Kill: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter?
I don’t’ have twitter so let’s kill that… I’ll marry Instagram and fuck facebook. That’s got to be a band name somewhere..
Have you had the chance to play a show with any of your musical heroes? Who were they and what was that experience like?
Actually yes! I was super fortunate in 2015 to be asked to join the Rockwiz house band on keys (Rockwiz is a tele show on SBS). I got to share the stage with some serious legends like Paul Kelly and Sarah Blasko.
I also MD’d the first ‘Her Sound, Her Story’ concert a couple of years ago- and played with some of Australia’s leading lady song writers/singers like: Ella Hooper, mojo juju, vera blue, airling, ecca vandal, mama kin, Julia stone, ah it was so epically cool.
Favourite Simpsons episode? Discuss.
The one where Ray Romano is the guest voice, and he plays the imaginary friend roof fixer. And then Homer has electro-shock therapy.
Do you believe in the term ‘sold out’?
Mmmmm it depends. Some people think ‘selling out’ is playing gigs you don’t want to play for money. I think that’s just surviving as a musicians, and maybe we should chill.
But then there’s rich musos who sell their music to KFC and yes I do think that’s selling out.
Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?
– Hannah Cameron
– Hannah Blackburn (I have a thing for hannah’s clearly…!?)
– Sweet Whirl
