Q&A w/ Fascinator

Does each member of the band have a nickname? If yes, spill them! If not, please make them up right now!

Currently I am flanked by Lord Decorator on oud, percussion and violin and Lord Elevator on saxophone.

What is your favourite track to perform live?

Currently it’s a song off my new album called Your Money, It’s Ugly. Mainly because I get to improvise on organ…which I’m quite terrible at, but occasionally i surprise myself.

Putting risks in the show keeps it fun and interesting and potentially cringy for the audience…otherwise i may as well be sitting up there pantomiming over my spacebar.

Have you ever tried to learn a new instrument or technique and just flat out failed at it?

I’m a terrible drummer. My brain writes cheques my limbs can’t cash.

Most people ascribe to one idea or another about how the universe began, what do you reckon about it all?

We here at the Church of Fascintology believe reality is a subjective bubble and there are at least 7 billion gods on earth not counting animals. There is no “began”. There is only now.

All touring bands know that no two venues are created equal. What are some of the best rooms you’ve played and why?

I once played in the staff toilet at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn. Real vibe in there. It was part of this tiny space tour I did where all the shows were sold out because only a handful of people could fit in. I also performed in the stall at Thousand Pound Bend in Melbourne, on a boat, in a tent and in the tiny chapel at MONA.

There’s a full 80s/90s pop culture and music resurgence happening right now, are you into it?

Genres are so reductive and lazy. I’m genre-fluid.

What festival is #1 on your list that you’d love to play one day?

The Olympics. If that can’t happen then Roskilde, Fuji Rock or Golden Plains are all on my list fer sherrr.

Without invoking genre, describe your music…

Ariel Pink Floyd

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?

That pretty much anyone can be in it. It used to be just people playing air instruments.

Also our entire set is an encore.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

Kelsey Lu – alien goddess who restored my faith that there are still more bowies and bjorks out there we’ve not yet found.

Surfbort – frontwoman Dani is a fucking force of nature and the whole band are total legends.
