Q&A w/ Hurst

Does each member of the band have a nickname? If yes, spill them! If not, please make them up right now!

I don’t think I have a nickname in the band, but when I have to put my foot down, we all tend to let “ANASABITCH” roll off the tongue.

Nick Zammit is Dick Dammit, or just Dick. Jake is often referred to as, “YAH-KEH”, because that’s what his Scandinavian relatives called him, or more recently, I decided to start calling him the Peach Keeper, because my phone’s autocorrection said so. And Ben doesn’t really have a nickname, I call him babe, and then sometimes the boys catch on too.

All artists go through periods where they seem to lack creativity, when you’re experiencing one of these phases, what do you do to get yourself out of it?

Gold miners don’t often strike gold on their first go. Same with being creative. I had to accept a while ago that I’m gonna create some crap stuff before I come up with good stuff. So I learned to be nicer to myself when that happens. Often I’ll take a step back and work on something else. But I never stop. I keep mining so to speak.

Care to give us a gear rundown?

I play a Mexican Fender Telecaster that plugs into my tuner, that plugs into a cranked Fender Blues Junior. Now, if you had asked the others this question, they would have had a field day… SUCKED IN BOYS.

There’s a full 80s/90s pop culture and music resurgence happening right now, are you into it?

You can bet your bottom dollar that we are into it. Listen to “Rattle Kids”.

Not music related…. or a question, but we’d love to see and share animage of your pet/s…

Jessie was rescued by the RSPCA and I took her only to help rehabilitate her, but since then she’s become a very important part of our family. And Shandy is a Labrador-Retriever aka the biggest derp known to man.

Favourite Simpsons episode? Discuss.

This is hands down the best question ever. Thank you. I definitely love the earlier seasons more than their later ones. I think they had a bit of heart to it. My favourite is one called “Lisa’s Pony”. In one scene she’s riding passed as the boys from school are watching and there’s this alternative version of Ralph Wiggum and the conversation goes, “She’s certainly tamed that horse” “Yes, but what man can tame her?” I crack up every time. Or there’s the one when Marge finds out her father is an Air Host. Or when Flanders in screaming because of the purple drapes. I can go on.

What’s the best show you’ve been to this year?

I saw Paul McCartney when he came to Australia. I’m went along despite the fact that I’m not a hugefan, but I left in complete awe of the man. I want to be 75 years old and rocking out on stage for 3 hours straight. If I could have a morsel of the kind of career he’s had, I’ll be a very lucky and grateful person.

Are you playing any shows anytime soon (if youlive outside of Australia, do you have any plans for a trip down under)?

May 17 – Marly Bar, Newtown

May 19 – Some Velvet Morning, Melbourne

And more to be announced…

Beatles or Rolling Stones and why?

Lennon and McCartney actually wrote The Rolling Stones’ first radio hit. Why is this even an argument?

Who would play you in a movie about the band?

Dora the Explorer.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

Press Club – They kind of exploded out of nowhere, we are obsessed.
Froyo – if Pasito was a sound, it would be these guys. These guys are gonna be indie pop sensations.
Octavian – these guys are so incognito, but I’m keen for more.
