Q&A w/ Reel Tapes

Without invoking genre, describe your music…

It’s a warm sunny night and you have your favourite party shirt on. As you get ready to go out you are listening to Reel Tapes to pump yourself up. ‘Cold Outside’ is your favourite song to blow-dry your hair to. You arrive at pre-drinks and you are just chilling with the gang on the couch. Reel Tapes is your pre-drinking band of choice and their new single ‘Deep Space’ is on repeat. In the uber to the club you aux cord ‘Underpants Charleston’. You get to the club. You know that Reel Tapes will never be played at a mainstream club, but you can dream and hope that ‘Fat Stacks’ becomes the next Seven Nation Army and the genre that starts with ‘R’ and ends in ‘ock’ will return to dominate music again.

Lots of songs start out with a working title and are eventually renamed, what were some of the original names of your songs before they were complete?

Our latest single, Deep Space, took a long time to write. In fact, we actually played a version of it at our first ever gig a few years ago. Back then it was called ‘Doom Doom’ because that’s the main sound in the verses. This was probably the only aspect of the song that hasn’t been considerably altered or changed.

What is the first song you ever wrote and did it make it onto a release?

We generally like to persist with our ideas until they eventually form a song we are happy with it. Deep Space is a good example of this. You just have to grind away at it and try new things with it. The first song we were happy with was called “The Good One” because at that stage it was our only good song. We did a bedroom demo of it but that has disappeared from the internet. It is now called ‘Moving in Circles’ and has taken on a more psychedelic vibe recently. Perhaps this will make it onto our debut album one day… Who knows?

What is your favourite track to perform live?

This is definitely Fat Stacks. The reason it’s our favourite is because everyone knows the lyrics and sings along at gigs. There is something great about a room full of people yelling “We’ve got some Fat Stacks baby” back at you.

Do you have any in-band memes? Plzzzz share one.

We love memes. We once had a memes page called ‘Reel Tapes Memes’ that was run by a fan, but that doesn’t exist anymore.

However, we do have a shitposting group called ‘Reel Tapes Noseposting’ on Facebook! It’s full of memes about the band, and our fans seem to enjoy roasting us… But it’s all friendly and fun so feel free to join!

Here is a favourite (context: we have a song called Fat Stacks and it’s about money):

Aside from other artists and music, what inspires you?

To be inspired you need energy. To sustain our rehearsals and maintain our inspiration we are currently really getting into elaborate toasted sandwiches with pesto and vegetables like eggplant and zucchini. Its real envelop pushing sort of stuff. We used to be obsessed with corn chips and salsa, and also party pies, so this new culinary direction is good for us. However, this may alienate our earliest fans…

Do you believe in the term ‘sold out’?

Collab with Cardi B coming soon.

Are you playing any shows anytime soon?

We are launching our latest single, Deep Space, on Saturday the 21st of July at Bar Open in Melbourne! Joining us are super special guests Dr Sinha’s Jazz Lobotomy and Manorism!

Who would play you in a movie about the band?

Conor: Danny DeVito

Rory: Ashton Kutcher

Liam A: Ryan Gosling

Ainsley: Emma Stone

Liam M: Kevin Bacon

Or alternatively, all of us are played by Andy Samberg wearing different clothes and Adam Sandler directs it.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

Scarlet Drive from WA are sick, Back Pocket from Melbourne just released a smooth EP and Meruka from Melbourne are very fun to see live.
