Q&A w/ Smacked Youth

Have you been involved in any previous projects before this one?
Funny enough we all met for the first time at a band competition where all our previous bands were competing against each other. Billy was in Alt/Rock band “Swoon”, Jake was in a Alt band called “The Sons of Tomorrow”. Sam was competing in the original line up of “Smacked Youth” and they actually won the competition.
All artists go through periods where they seem to lack creativity, when you’re experiencing one of these phases, what do you do to get yourself out of it?

Usually when we get stuck with writing we mostly get into a room and punch out some cover songs. Then we start to come up with riffs and melodies to start the process of writing songs. We bounce ideas off each other until we come up with something we all like.

What is your local scene like?

Smacked Youth started back when our favourite All Ages venue “Drone” was still going where we played with bands like “Split Feed and  Introvert. When Drone was still running the Newy scene from our view was pretty varied, you could go any Friday or Saturday and see anything from a metal band to a acoustic soloist. When the council shut Drone down for bullshit reasons, the scene started to change a bit, at least in the AA scene. Everything started to lean more towards a mainly surf-pop/rock “Hockey Dad” vibe. At this point we started spreading into the 18+ scene where we came across mad bands like “Dave” and “Raave Tapes”.

What is your favourite track to perform live?

We all really like “Come Again”, but we reckon it’ll never record it. It’s more or a live song.

Do you have any in-band memes? Plzzzz share one.

The biggest joke going round at the moment would be “chode dog”. Chode dog is one of Billy’s 5 dogs that hang around while we practice in the shed. The dogs real name is Grizz but we call it chode dog because of its short stumpy neck. We all love chode dog more then anything, Sam in particular.

Favourite Simpsons episode? Discuss.
We all love “Homer and Apu”, you know the one where Apu looses the Kwik-e-Mart and he sings that song about it, yeah that’s a good one.

What festival is #1 on your list that you’d love to play one day?

Splendour and Falls would be mad but #1 dream would be to play the comeback show at Fat As Butter in Newy, that would be fucking sick!

How would you describe ‘success‘ for your band?

I guesss success for us would just be getting to the point were we wouldn’t have to work anymore. Sam’s always said that his goal in life is to be a male Jigalo once we’ve gotten big, so I guess when that happens we will know we’ve succeeded.

What’s the best show you’ve been to this year?

Playing the Oxford Art Factory early in the year opening for one our all time favourite bands “Cloud Nothings” was a massive highlight for us. The show was skit and we met the guys and gals from “Bloods” who we are now big fans of aswell.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

There are heaps of Newy bands that need to be noticed, some like “Dave”, “Surf Trash” and “Dooks of Kooks”. Outside of Newy we love bands like “Kill Dirty Youth”, “Electric Zebra” and “Bloods”.
