QnA Buffet with Baby Blue

Does each member of the band have a nickname? If yes, spill them! If not, please make them up right now!

Yep! We have a lot of nicknames, probably too many to mention. I go by Rhea (Ray), razor, razor blade, Rey Mysterio, Radar, ray quando, sting rhea and more. Fabian goes by Diggler, Nugget, Fabio, Fabage’. Nathanael goes by Nat, Nat dog, Bat, Nazzy Ride. Dave goes by Moon unit, Moon dude, aperol moonington, Nude dude and Sir Davos.

What is your favourite track to perform live?

Currently really enjoying fire and ice, our new single. Its really fun to play and sing.

What are some of your earliest musical influences that have found their way into the music you’re currently making?

Neil young, Patti Smith, The Beatles.

Aside from other artists and music, what inspires you?

Everyday life. Real things that happen, thoughts and feelings. My friends and art also play a big role. I know so many talented people and it’s always inspiring to see them doing their thing.

Have you ever tried to learn a new instrument or technique and just flat out failed at it?

Yeah I feel like every time you first try something you fail at it to some extent right? It’s just that each time you fail a little bit less. I’m learning bass right now to play for Gena rose Bruce and I’m not flat out failing anymore haha. I still have a lot of work and more failing to do though.

Most people ascribe to one idea or another about how the universe began, what do you reckon about it all?

We’re all just part of a micro universe that someone created. They’re using our energy and emotions to charge their remote control.

Are there any band photographers that you’re into and would love to be shot by?

Yeah I love Iain Laidlaw’s stuff as well as Danny Cohen and Kalindy Williams.

What is the biggest challenge you have had to overcome as a band/artist so far?

Oooft! Big question. I think the overall management of the band as friends and people I’m lucky enough to play music with. We all get along really well but I’m constantly worried whether everyone is having a good time or into the songs I’m bringing into rehearsals. I worry about people a lot. It’s pretty unhealthy.

Recently, creating more diversity within the Aus music scene has been a high priority for event organisers and music curators everywhere, what changes have you personally seen and how have they affected you/your band?

I like to think we’ve personally been given opportunities because we work hard and are a good band. If we have benefitted from people actively trying to have a female front person I’m unaware of it. I think it’s great that people are being called out for their lack of diversity within programming though. It’s about time.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

No local, Michael Beach and Gena Rose Bruce.
