Today Bad Pony announced the dates that the will be heading over to the USA and showcasing at the worlds largest music industry event, SXSW in Austin, Texas. Bad Pony started off the year strong with the release of new single Knife and a string of awesome shows including a spot at QLD annual OZfest. We sent the guys our QnA Buffet snack on, gotta say, it’s one of our faves so far! Check out ‘Knife’ and the guys SXSW dates below.
Does each member of the band have a nickname? If yes, spill them! If not, please make them up right now!
Jarred = Jaz, Mark = Dusty (his alter ego), Cron = Cronzie, Izaac = Zac Attack or “Orzac” and Sam is sometimes referred to as “Glamuel”
What is your favourite track to perform live?
We think at the moment it has to be our new single “Knife”. It has a raw energy and cheekyness cheekiness to it which we love.
What is the biggest challenge you have had to overcome as a band so far?
Not unique to us, but juggling touring and being in a band in general with day jobs and relationships can be quite a challenge. The other thing is keeping going at times when it feels like we are spinning our wheels and not really making progress.
What festival is #1 on your list that you’d love to play one day?
Locally it would have to be Splendour in the Grass or Falls Festival…. if we are thinking bigger, Glastonbury!
Without invoking genre, describe your music…
A surge of adrenalin sprinkled with a bit of tenderness.
How was your high school experience? Were you in a band?
I (Cron) played in one or two bands throughout high school, though in the town I grew up in bands weren’t a big thing. I think we were one of only 3 bands in area! I couldn’t wait to be done with school and get on with being an adult…. now I appreciate the value of simpler times.
If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your band which one would it be?
Our sound has changed a bit over the last few years but I we think “Michael Moore” has lots of elements that make us “us.”
In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?
We dont don’t have a drummer in the traditional sense. Jarred, our main vocalist, stands right in front and plays half the drum kit. He was a drummer long before he was a singer so its it’s not like he got bored and picked up some drums; He is a great drummer and beats the living daylights out them. Our other guitarist Sam, plays the kick drum but with his heel, and the other two tom toms are split between Mark (bass) and Isaac (keys). This all makes for a pretty animated and energetic live show.
Where are people able to hear your songs?
Everywhere! Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play Music, YoutTube and Facebook.
What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a band?
Being accepted to play at SXSW in Austin, Texas in March… it feels like a bit of a reward after working hard as a band for the last few years…. and will probably lead to more hard work if all goes well!
Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?
Definitely check out Feelds, he just released his debut EP and its a cracker… one of my our favourite voices in Australia. Also Halcyon Drive from Melbourne and Wharves from Lennox Head/Byron.
