REVIEW: RACHEL MARIA COX – I JUST HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS

So, I’m fucking loving this whole “Missy Higgins meets Smith Street Band” vibe that’s going around. Yes I’m aware some people will consider me a shit-cunt for putting it that way (or for referencing Missy rather than Courtney), but up until the end of last year I really only listened to hardcore prog, so liking music where nobody is screaming is still new to me. So fuck off.

ANYWAY!

Rachel Maria Cox is my favourite person doing these kind of songs right now. Track one (A Phone I Can’t Use) from the new EP ‘I Just Have A Lot Of Feelings’ is a deceptive little shit. Coming in with with all these up tempo happy vibes, I think I’m about to hear a record about..oh I don’t know…fucking….beers out the back with mates in summer or something…you know how these things go. But yeah nah. These aren’t those songs aye.

These songs are about sad times and dying alone, and by the end you kinda feel as though you’ve just had a sneaky read of RMC’s diary while they’ve popped down to the shops to grab some milk, and when they come back you’re going ask “hey dude, are you ok?”

For me the standout moment on the record comes at the very end of track 4 (Zips, Netflix & Dinner For Six), I’m not going to spoil it, but the feeling it gave me is more or less identical to the feeling you get when you’re binge watching a new series and an episode ends in a really twisted fucked up way and your face gets that sad/horrified/open mouthed expression as the credits roll and indicate that, yes, they’re really leaving you with THAT!

And just like a kick ass new series I’m already looking forward to RMCs next episode…um…I mean, release and seeing where this story goes!
