Freedom Is Mine is the barnstorming new single from Grammy winning Australian rock lords Wolfmother.
Released independently and produced by Wolfmother main man Andrew Stockdale in his Byron Bay studio, the track evokes the DIY aesthetic and raw intensity present when the band hit ground running and changed the rock ‘n’ roll landscape with their debut E.P. way back in the year 2000. Dropped without warning or fanfare, the single represents a new chapter of creativity and spontaneity from a band that has experienced the highest accolades available in their chosen arena.
“Freedom Is Mine, is sort of about breaking the invisible chains that we may impose upon ourselves in daily life. This song in itself is an attempt to be in the moment and live life the way that that the individual may see fit in the present moment,” explains Stockdale. “We’re in a strange space where the content providers and the various means of distribution are re- evaluating their relationship. Is it about power or is it about doing what you’re doing for the love of doing it.”
It is getting back to doing what he loves and eschewing the traditional conventions of the music business that has reinvigorated both Stockdale and his band, and that renewed sense of excitement in creation comes across in spades in this riff heavy offering. “This song was recorded in my studio in Byron Bay two days before we flew out to Europe to play in the Azores Islands. If anything it was a mission statement to be in the moment, making music is a lot about being in the moment being flexible and allowing for an element of flexibility.”
“Sometimes we forget why we started something in the first place and why we’re doing it a certain way,” the front man continues. “I myself have been part of labels and signed away to 50 pages of terms and conditions before I knew what a producer was, what a tour manager was, or even a valve amp for that matter! Like what is an E.P? Why are we conforming to old titles that were governed by old technical limitations? A few people are asking are we putting out a record. The way I see it what is a record, over 30mins of music? I may well put out a song a week straight onto iTunes, Spotify, YouTube etc. So here it is.”
